petraeus. she turned over all of the e-mails to an fbi agent she knew never realizing the impact they would have. the people close to the kelleys say jill kelley never had an affair with general allen, and the pentagon has found no evidence to the contrary, but officials say the e-mails had enough inappropriate language to warrant an investigation. >> no one should leap to any conclusions here. general allen is doing an excellent job at isaf in leading those forces. he certainly has my continued confidence to lead our forces and to continue the fight. >> reporter: the fbi continued looking through documents they took monday night from broadwell's home but so far have found no evidence of anything highly classified. but the pentagon suspended broadwell's security clearances and macdill air force base revoked jill kelley's pass to the base. >> that was nbc's andrea mitchell reporting. >>> well, overseas now where fears of a new war in the middle east are on the rise after israelis took out the top military commander of hamas in a ferocious attack yesterday. and just this morning, the first is

with the married socialite. the journal also reports kelley tried this summer to get the fbi to drop the investigation that began with kelley's complaint of harassing e-mails traced back to broadwell. people familiar with the case tell the journal that she became worried about personal information being provided to investigators. meanwhile, the washington post quotes senior law enforcement officials as saying the search conducted at broadwell's home monday night marks a renewed focus on learning just how broadwell gained access to classified files. jill kelley, who has given some impression that she has some kind of state department status that officials say she does not have, called police last weekend after news crews, including nbc, staked out her home and at one point invoked diplomatic-type privileges. >> i am an honorary consul-general so i have inviolability so they should not be able to cross my property. i don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well. >> just who is jill kelley. her name has come up in connection with two of the nation's top commander

as well. the fbi had concluded that this was a personal matter and that was one of the reasons it took a while to filter up to president obama. meantime, these committees on thursday saw real time video of the attack in benghazi and a couple of committees that were holding hearings without petraeus got into heated shouting matches about whether or not the u.s. intentionally misled the public into thinking it was a spontaneous and not a terror attack. u.n. ambassador susan rice, her name has been thrown out there as secretary of state. republicans are pushing back because she was the one who five days after that attack said it was spontaneous. petraeus today could shed some light on all of this. by the way, his hearing is closed but later the intelligence committees hope to have open public hearings here on capital hill. lynn. >> tracie pots for us in washington. tracie, thank you. >>> for a look at the weather, let's check in with nbc meteorologist bill karins has the weather. i'm surprised you would show up. >> i would challenge anyone to have an easier job today than me, even you. >>
